STEAM-y MONDAY classes celebrate the intersection of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Classes are held at the Burton Center in West Asheville from 11:00 - 2:30 for a four-week period. Participants can choose one class or both each month. A 30-minute supervised lunch/play period is provided between classes. Our classes for fall 2018 semester focus on Stop-Motion Animation and Engineering Challenges:
STEAMy Mondays - Fall 2019
Let’s Make a Movie (September 9, 16, 23, 30)
Do you love to dress in costume and act? Ever dreamed of being a Movie Director? Here’s your chance to try it out! Students will work together to plan, act, shoot, direct and edit a short movie of their own design. Students will receive a digital copy of their movie after the last class.
Let’s Make a Costume Piece – Mask, Hat, Cape or ? (October 7, 14, 21, 28)
Students will design and create a mask, costume piece or prop. Construction materials will include structural cardboard, glue-layered brown or newspaper, papier mache, no-sew fabric, foam, paint and more.
Papercraft a Flying Dragon (Nov 4, 11, 18, 25)
Craft a beautiful dragon sculpture or toy! Students will choose to create from colorful, pre-designed patterns or design one of their own. We will craft dragons that fly like paper airplanes, hang with clear thread or stand on their legs. Choose from an Ender Dragon, Toothless, Light Fury and more, or create one of your own imagination!
Make a Holiday Gift – BATH BOMBS (Dec 2)
Students will measure, mix and mold a dozen bath bombs with all-natural ingredients and essential oils. Each student will make a dozen egg-shaped bath bombs with secret toys or bath beads inside. Bath bombs will come home in an egg carton and need to dry for 1-2 days before ready to use. Bath bombs make great homemade holiday gifts as well as clean, calming fun in the bath!
Make a Holiday Gift – ORNAMENTS (Dec 9)
Students will use wire and beads to craft colorful dragonflies and butterflies into ornaments for the tree or garden!
Make a Holiday Gift - CANDLES (Dec 16)
grades 4-8 (11:00 am - 12:30 pm)
