STEAM-y Mondays

STEAM-y MONDAYS at the Burton Center


STEAM-y MONDAY classes celebrate the intersection of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Classes are held at the Burton Center in West Asheville from 11:00 - 2:30 for a four-week period. Participants can choose one class or both each month.  A 30-minute supervised lunch/play period is provided between classes, typically on the playground outdoors.  Grades 1-6

February Session (Feb. 3-Feb. 24)

Our Amazing Body Systems! (1:00 - 2:30)

Students will be introduced to three body systems - the muscular-skeletal system, the digestive system, and the circulatory system. We will learn about the organs in the systems through hands-on activities.

Human Body - Craft and Learn (11:00-12:30)

Projects that make learning fun!  In this class we will craft shrinky-dink cell models, brain hats, a fun & functional soundwave device, and a human body board game.  Each student will make their own take-home project each week.  All materials provided.

March Session (March 9 – March 30)

LET’S BUILD KITES!  (11:00-12:30)

Students will use a selection of materials to build flyable kites in the classic shape in varying sizes.  If the weather cooperates, we may even get to fly them in the field behind the community center!  Materials and kite string provided.

Engineering Challenge: Wind Power (1:00-2:30)

Students will work in teams and use the engineering process to design, test, and improve a system that moves a vehicle using wind power.

April Session (April 6 – April 27)

Students will select a rock or mineral and write a brief script about it.  They will then create artwork with clay and paper to use in a stop motion animation about their rock or mineral.  Cameras, animation stands and art supplies provided.  Students will receive a DVD and/or digital link to their movie as preferred.

Rock Hounds (1:00-2:30)

Students will learn about rocks and minerals through hands-on activities and labs. They will also learn how we use rocks and minerals in our everyday lives.

May Session (May 4 – May 25)

Math Games Galore!  (11:00-12:30)

Large-scale and small, outdoors and in, we will have fun while we learn by playing many math games!

Engineering Challenge: Games (1:00-2:30)

Students will work in teams to design, create, test, and improve a board game on a topic of their choice using the engineering process.
