Students tend to excel in math when the curriculum is tailored to their level - when it's not too difficult, and not too easy, but just right. Primary resources include Saxon, Spectrum & Learn Math Fast for students to complete at their own pace. All curriculum provided and corrected. Students thrive with this method, especially when they practice on their own between sessions.
Students will learn about and practice the arts of speech & debate including how to craft a strong argument, respectful communication, specific styles of debate & more!
Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is an international educational program that fosters creative problem-solving, teamwork, and performance skills through competitive challenges. Students work in teams to solve long-term and spontaneous problems, developing self-confidence and new friendships along the way. The program culminates in tournaments where teams present their solutions and compete with others. This year we are hosting a Middle School team with a maximum of 7 students.
Each Tuesday morning we walk 4/10 of a mile to the East Asheville Library where students find books, read, and learn how to use the library resources. As we are out and about in our community, we also connect with community members including firefighters, artists, librarians and more. We finish up our visit with 20 minutes on the playground and a walk back in time for lunch.
Taking 2D resources and creating in 3D is both fun and a rewarding challenge for our minds. In this class, students use paper, cardboard, wood and more to create projects both large and small. From popup cards to furniture and models to lamps, students follow our 3-part project process: PLAN, CREATE, SHARE/SHOW
From wave theory to quantum computing, we'll wrap our heads around the mind-boggling theories of quantum physics guided by Carl Pratt's new book, QUANTUM PHYSICS FOR BEGINNERS (available both in print and audio). We'll investigate what exactly is light and how does it travel, the Quantum & String Theories, Schrodinger's Cat, quantum entanglement & more. Buckle up and prepare to have your mind blown!
Big History is a unique course that looks at the history of the entire Universe, stretching 13.8 billion years into the past and all the way into the future. You’ll travel to the earliest stars, discover new chemical elements, investigate the Earth’s fiery origins, explore how life on Earth evolved, and journey through human history to see what the future may hold. Curriculum designed by the OER Project includes the following units:
Unit 1: What is Big History?
Unit 2: History of the Universe & Earth
Unit 3: Life
Unit 4: Early Humans
Unit 5: Agriculture & Complex Societies
Unit 6: The Modern Age
Unit 7: The Future
We will complete Units 1-3 this fall and Units 4-7 in the spring.

Each class begins with a music theory concept as we learn the language of music notation. We then practice in ensemble & small groups, have free practice time to explore new instruments and finish with singing. We celebrate our semester end with a performance!
A more advanced course where we will delve into a specific topic each month. This class is co-taught with professional filmmaker, Raul Acosta.
